At the Puslinch Dump
The Puslich dump is located on Concession #4 between Country Road #35 and The Hanlon (Hiway #6). It's open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Tuesdays and Fridays and from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm on Saturdays.

Of course it's not really called "the dump". The official name is "The Township of Puslinch Sanitary Landfill". But everyone just calls it the dump.
This a picture of the recycling area taken on a grey December day.
The landfill site employs three people on a part-time basis. Judy Siefert is the friendly face you see in the office when you stop to present your landfill pass. She also weighs the trucks on the scale. Fred Lamb drives the compactor--that huge piece of heavy equipment that flattens the garbage. The yardkeeper is John A. Riddell, who keeps things tidy. Below is a picture of John cleaning snow off the scale beside the office.
Now that you know who all the staff are at the landfill be sure to say "Hi" to them next time your there.
On 1 January, 2001 the County of Wellington will take over management of all waste facilities within the county. While the County Waste Management Fact Sheet asserts that "there should be no noticeable change to the public initially since no changes are planned right away, and as changes do occur, there will be plenty of notice." It also says that it "will be evaluating all existing waste management programs..."
The above was written in December 2000. By June 2001 some significant changes have occured at the dump. It is now much cleaner and neater. Some landscaping has been done and grass planted. And even though it was a very hot, humid day when I was there, the odor wasn't overpowering as it has been in previous years. Also, the recycling area was much tidier and there was not the usual cloud of wasps around the cans.

Last week the Township of Puslinch sent out the final tax bill for the year 2001. Included with the bill was an announcement that landfill permits/passes will no longer be issued. While I was at the dump I asked Judy what was going to replace the permit. She said that there was a proposal by the County to charge Puslinchers one dollar per bag of garbage. She also said that there will a public meeting on June 27 at 7:00 pm at the Community Centre to discuss this proposal.
 The Dump from the Air
Updated May, 2002.
I was at the dump last week and more changes have occured. Judy no longer works there. It is now Ruth Anne in the office. The dump is now called "The Aberfoyle Landfill" and it is open Tuesday to Saturday from 8 to 4. It is also taking more items for recycling. For more information go to the The Wellington County Solid Waste Services.

I was at the dump yesterday and it is looking good! However it is filling up at an alarming rate. In the '90s I could hardly notice a change from year to year. Now I can notice a change every time I go.
