The Puslinch Library

Library Photo

By Frankie Shaw

The Wellington County library system is comprised of 13 branches spread around the county, with a central library/headquarters located in Elora. Puslinch is the southernmost branch, serving a community of just over 5,000 residents.

Our collection is growing and we can offer, in addition to regular books, talking books (tape or CD), video (VHS or DVD) interactive multimedia, and magazines for children and adults.

We have access to all the items in the Wellington County system and we have an excellent delivery system for those who request items not found on our shelves.

We can give professional help in finding employment. We also offer internet access to independent researchers.

We host a weekly Story Time for children aged 3 to 5 years. It is held on Friday mornings from 10.00 am. - 11.00am. Sessions run for 6 weeks. Phone for details and to register.

Lines from the Library (April 2005)

Canadian Heroine?
To celebrate the release of the new book ‘100 Canadian Heroines’, young Canadians are asked to make a case for their favourite Canadian heroine in Canadian history. The subject of the winning essay will be the 101st Canadian Heroine. The first prize winner will have their winning essay published in Merna Foster’s next collection of Canadian heroines; $300 worth of books published by Dundurn Press and a $100 cash prize!

The rules are simple. The heroine must:

1. not be alive.
2. be Canadian-born or have accomplished something significant in Canada.
3. not be one of the heroines in ‘100 Canadian Heroines’ by Merna Foster.

The entrant must be 12-16 years of age and living in Canada. The essay should be 500-700 words, typed or neatly printed with all the sources documented. Closing date is April 30th 2005. Please send your entry to Contest, Dundurn Press, 8 Market Street, Suite 200, Toronto, On. M5E 1M6 Full contest rules are also available at www.dundurn.com/contests.html.

Print-Run Record
Book five of the Harry Potter series holds the record for the largest print-run in history. Thirteen million hardback copies of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix were printed to meet huge demand generated for its release, which saw 875,000 advance orders taken on Amazon.com alone. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (book 4) holds the record for the most advance orders; a colossal 5.3 million copies (that’s around 40 times as many as the average bestseller) were ordered and prepaid worldwide before its release.

This is just an excuse to warn everyone that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is to be released in July. Will history repeat itself? Can it surpass previous records? Or has the bubble burst? Watch this space. Your favourite books?

It has been suggested that we have a box in the library where you may post the titles which you have particularly enjoyed. Is there a call for this? Would it be a good idea? Please let me know your thoughts.
