The Puslinch Library

Library Photo

By Frankie Shaw

The Wellington County library system is comprised of 14 branches spread around the county, with a central library/headquarters located in Elora. Puslinch is the southernmost branch, serving a community of just over 5,000 residents.

Our collection is growing and we can offer, in addition to regular books, talking books (tape or CD), video (VHS or DVD) interactive multimedia, and magazines for children and adults.

We have access to all the items in the Wellington County system and we have an excellent delivery system for those who request items not found on our shelves.

We can give professional help in finding employment. We also offer internet access to independent researchers.

We host a weekly Story Time for children aged 3 to 5 years. It is held on Thursday mornings from 10.00 am. - 11.00am. Sessions run for 6 weeks. Phone for details and to register.

Lines from the Library (July 2005)

By Frankie Shaw

Initiated in 2002, the White Pine Award reading programme offers high school teens the opportunity to read the best of Canadian young adult fiction titles. Students read 10 nominated books and then vote for their favourite title. Based on this voting across the province, the most popular book is then designated the White Pine winner. The goals of the White Pine award reading programme are to promote reading for pleasure, to make students aware of quality Canadian young adult titles and to provide opportunities for youth to discuss the nominated titles in a meaningful manner. (This could swell the ranks of book clubs at some future point and enhance the discussions)

The White Pine Award for 2005 has gone to Marnelle Tokio's first book “More Than You Can Chew”. This semi-autobiographical novel, sometimes funny, mostly tragic, will interest anyone, student or adult, who has either suffered from, or is curious about eating disorders. Marnelle, now working on her second book while doing a book promotion tour, is the cousin of well-known Puslinch Roads Superintendent, Jim Howlett.

Of interest to our adult members will be the EverGreen award. Organized along similar lines to the White Pine , now adult library patrons will have the opportunity to vote for the work of Canadian fiction or non-fiction which they have liked the most. 10 titles are offered and will be voted on during Ontario Library week (October 17th -23rd), either on-line or through ballet boxes at the library. The winner will be announced in November 2005. Some of these titles are now among my favourite books. Give them a try!

We have a list of this year’s nominated books, together with reviews, on display at the library, but in case you prefer to order on-line, the nominated titles are;

Fiction: Crow Lake by Mary Lawson, Displaced Persons by Margie Taylor, In a Dry Season by Peter Robinson, Midnight at the Dragon Café by Judy Fong Bates, Rush Home Road by Lori Lansens, See Jane Run by Jane Fielding and The Stone Carvers by Jane Urquhart.

Non-fiction. The Closer We Are to Dying by Joe Fiorito, Shake Hands with the Devil by Romeo Dallaire and Walk to New York by Charles Wilkins. We have all of these books on our shelves and will be happy to reserve them for you. If you order them on-line ( www.county.wellington.on.ca click on library) be sure to specify pick-up at Pu. Don’t forget that our ‘Summer Fun at the Library’ camp will take place every morning during the week starting July 18th. This will be a great opportunity for children aged from 5 – 12 to participate in all kinds of interesting things to do. Please register before July 7th to avoid disappointment.

As well, 'Blast Off'', our reading programme for children of all ages up to 12, will be run continuously through the summer months. Children will get enthused by the theme related prizes on offer and will be encouraged to keep up with their reading skills. This programme will blast off at the beginning of July and continue through until the last week of August. Please phone the library at 763-8026 for further details.
