Lines from the Library (October 2003)

By Frankie Shaw

So, enough of this summer madness. It's time to wring out the bathing suits, put your nose to the grindstone and get back to some work. The children are back in school, or starting school for the first time and Mums are breathing a sigh of relief now that they have a little thinking time to themselves. We really noticed the difference that first week of ‘back to school'; the door ceased its continual swinging for the first time since June and the back yard is quiet until 3.30 p.m. when school's out for the day.

We really enjoyed having Kate Culver around to help us for the summer, and I am sure that all our borrowers were pleased to see a new young face around the place. Kate was very excited to be going off to Western University to study music with an emphasis on voice.

Alanna Kitching won the Summer Reading Club first prize of a $25.00 gift voucher to spend at Chapters. Well done Alanna! She had some stiff competition though, because we had more youngsters than usual who took part in the summer reading programme We are very grateful to the TD bank for sponsoring this event and for the input of the Southern Ontario Library Service and Toronto Public Library, who never fail to come up with something unique every year.

Our Reading Aloud programme, a new venture here, had only a single participant. However Callum was faithful in attendance, enthusiastic to display his reading skills and happy to add new words to his vocabulary in readiness for a return to school.

Ontario Public Library week will be October 20th-26th. Please give us a visit, tell us about the books you'd like to recommend and we'll have some cookies and juice to share with you. The one is not dependent upon the other though, and even if you don't want to tell us about your choice of books, we'll still share our cookies and juice!
