The Puslinch Library

Library Photo

By Frankie Shaw

The Wellington County library system is comprised of 13 branches spread around the county, with a central library/headquarters located in Elora. Puslinch is the southernmost branch, serving a community of just over 5,000 residents.

Our collection is growing and we can offer, in addition to regular books, talking books (tape or CD), video (VHS or DVD) interactive multimedia, and magazines for children and adults.

We have access to all the items in the Wellington County system and we have an excellent delivery system for those who request items not found on our shelves.

We can give professional help in finding employment. We also offer internet access to independent researchers.

We host a weekly Story Time for children aged 3 to 5 years. It is held on Friday mornings from 10.00 am. - 11.00am. Sessions run for 6 weeks. Phone for details and to register.

Lines from the Library (October 2004)

By Frankie Shaw

Some alternative health treatments are hard to follow. For example, one Vancouver yoga teacher has been drinking her own urine every day for the past two decades. She claims that not only is it rich in nutrients but also offers numerous health benefits, including a boosted immune system. She drinks it first thing in the morning and if she feels her energy levels dropping, she drinks 3 cups a day. She hasn't seen a doctor in 20 years. There are also other benefits to pee. You can use it as a cleanser, as a treatment for eczema, yeast infections, arthritis, sore throats, toothache and for a shampoo. Her list of possible uses goes on and on. I mention this because in the article I was reading, she recommends a book called "The Golden Fountain; the complete guide to urine therapy, by Coen van der Kroon, an Amsterdam urine-therapy consultant who has organized world conferences on the treatment.(I'm serious!) This book has been sitting on our shelves for quite some time now and narrowly escaped being weeded out during our big clean-up over the summer. It may have come to Puslinch before Puslinch was ready for it, because it has not left the shelves since it was put there! (This might be a good time to remind you that you can place holds for items in the library on-line from your home computer, or if you want to have a quiet read in one of our comfy armchairs, you will find it at Dewey # 615.36, among the health books.)

Sceptics can't deny that urine has saved lives. Remember Aaron Ralston the 27 year-old whose arm became pinned under a boulder while he was climbing in Utah? Before cutting off his limb by himself, he ran out of water and drank his own urine to survive ( we have his book here, too, Between a Rock and a Hard Place); the schoolchildren held hostage in Beslan, recently, having run out of water during their terrible ordeal, were forced to drink their own urine in order to stay alive. So don't take the 'p' out of urine therapy. There's more to it than meets the eye. Apparently it makes a good eye-wash too - and that's NOT eye-wash!

We are going to try something new with our Storytime. Beginning on September 28 we will be running our popular programme on Thursday mornings at 10.00 am as well as on Friday mornings at the same time. If you have a 3-5 year old who would enjoy listening to stories, learning songs and action rhymes and making crafts to be proud of then, please, register by phone at 763-8026 or in person during opening hours.

No-one has any excuse for forgetting when we are open now, because we have some very useful fridge magnets listing stuff like our opening hours, phone and web-site address. They are great for holding those book receipts safe and there's one for everyone. So, please, pick yours up when you next come in.
