Lines from the Library (November 2002)

By Frankie Shaw

We now have two high speed public access computers in the library, providing help for all our Wellington County residents.

With this in mind, I was intrigued by an announcement from TVO about a new website called Eureka! This site is especially for students who are having trouble with their homework. Now they can log on and get help. The Eureka! Ask a teacher chatroom connects students with certified Ontario teachers. Using the specifically designed whiteboard technology, students and teachers can communicate through diagrams or plain text, just as they would in the classroom.

Eureka! Ask a Teacher is getting ever more popular with Ontario students as they discover new ways to make use of TVOntario's free curriculum based website. Many students log on every time they encounter difficulties with their homework, or just when they need special training in preparation for a provincial test.

Regular students develop good working relationships with individual teachers to help them over the hurdles they may find in their homework, which is very useful for those students who find it hard to keep up with the pace of the curriculum. Students in all grades will find teachers trained to answer their homework questions from Sunday to Thursday evenings between 6.30 and 10.30 pm.

If you want to give it a try, visit Eureka! Ask a Teacher at tvo.org. It can make a difference to both student's and parent's lives!

Christmas will soon be upon us, and I would like to take this opportunity of saying a big thankyou to Janet for all her hard work during the course of the year. Her tasteful and graphic displays make our library the welcoming place it is, and add much to the pleasure of working here.

Santa is a regular visitor to our library, and we have more new books for your edification and delight.
