The Puslinch Library

Library Photo

By Frankie Shaw

The Wellington County library system is comprised of 14 branches spread around the county, with a central library/headquarters located in Elora. Puslinch is the southernmost branch, serving a community of just over 5,000 residents.

Our collection is growing and we can offer, in addition to regular books, talking books (tape or CD), video (VHS or DVD) interactive multimedia, and magazines for children and adults.

We have access to all the items in the Wellington County system and we have an excellent delivery system for those who request items not found on our shelves.

We can give professional help in finding employment. We also offer internet access to independent researchers.

We host a weekly Story Time for children aged 3 to 5 years. It is held on Thursday mornings from 10.00 am. - 11.00am. Sessions run for 6 weeks. Phone for details and to register.

Lines from the Library (November 2005)

By Frankie Shaw

Please note that the Library will be closed for the whole week of November 7th and will re-open on Tuesday 15th November. After almost 20 years we are to have a new carpet. We are looking forward to this but it will involve a huge amount of lifting and hauling books and bookcases before we can truly enjoy it. Who thought that library personnel were hired because of their love of books? Forget that – what they really need is MUSCLE!

It’s that time of year when the winners of literary awards are announced. Rather than list a whole lot of authors and titles, which are readily available from various websites, I thought that I would present a different list put together by book club members in North America, who reflected on the titles they had read and discussed. The following list represents the voices of more than 1500 book group members.

1.     The Red Tent by Anita Diament.
2.     Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier.
3.     The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.
4.     Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross.
5.     Girl in Hyacinth blue by Susan Vreeland.
6.     Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver.
7.     Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden.
8.     The House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus.
9.     Bonesetter’s Daughter by Amy Tan.
10.     The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood.
11.     Bee Season by Myra Goldberg.
12.     A painted House by John Grisham.

Edeet Ravel, a Guelph resident has been nominated for the Giller Prize for ‘Wall of Light’ (the story of a math. professor at Tel Aviv University), along with Joan Barfoot of London, Ont. for ‘Luck’, David Bergen of Winnepeg for ‘The Time in-Between’ about a veteran’s pilgrimage from B.C’s Fraser Valley to Vietnam, and Camilla Gibb of Toronto for ‘Sweetness in the Belly’, the tale of a Muslim nurse who flees Ethiopia for England. The winner will be announced at a gala in Toronto on Nov 8th, with the winner pocketing $40,000 and $2,500 going to the each of the three runners-up.
