The Puslinch Library

Library Photo

By Frankie Shaw

The Wellington County library system is comprised of 14 branches spread around the county, with a central library/headquarters located in Elora. Puslinch is the southernmost branch, serving a community of just over 5,000 residents.

Our collection is growing and we can offer, in addition to regular books, talking books (tape or CD), video (VHS or DVD) interactive multimedia, and magazines for children and adults.

We have access to all the items in the Wellington County system and we have an excellent delivery system for those who request items not found on our shelves.

We can give professional help in finding employment. We also offer internet access to independent researchers.

We host a weekly Story Time for children aged 3 to 5 years. It is held on Thursday mornings from 10.00 am. - 11.00am. Sessions run for 6 weeks. Phone for details and to register.

Lines from the Library (December 2005)

By Frankie Shaw

The new carpet is finally laid but, like all improvements, not without a degree of effort. We had helpers, some press-ganged into service, others who came of their own free will.

The prospect was daunting; to clear all the bookshelves, box all the books and move the shelves and boxes across the room in order to allow the carpet fitters plenty of space in which to manoeuvre. It took days of sheer hard work to label, fill and move the blue recycle boxes – almost 500 in total – but even more effort to get those books back on the shelves in library order. The process was not entirely without its frustrations but the degree of co-operation, goodwill and humour made the whole job worthwhile and even enjoyable in some masochistic kind of way. It’s certainly not an experience I should like to repeat but one I wouldn’t like to have missed, either! We could not have done it alone and I would like to let Brandon, Bryce, Eric, Hugh, Malcolm, Scott, Stephanie, Susannah and of course Janet and Janice know just how grateful I am for all their efforts. This team, together with Mike and Rich from the County Maintenance Department, could not have been bettered.

And look at the library! We took the opportunity to replace the freestanding shelves in such a way that it now seems to be more spacious and open. It is indeed a lovely place to work and a pleasant place for our friends to come and enjoy some time-out.

The new carpet

We have just had a delivery of quite a few titles in the ‘Nancy Drew’ series, the first one of which was published over 75 years ago and is still very popular. The author of this series, as well as of the ‘Hardy Boys’ and the ‘Bobbsey Twins’, together with the lesser known ‘Outdoor Girls’, ‘Motor Girls’, ‘Ruth Fielding’, ‘Doris Force’ and ‘Perry Pierce’ were all written by a man – the supremely prolific Edward Stratemeyer. He wrote and published children’s fiction for over forty years. What was interesting about him was that he had discovered that by writing under pen names such as Laura Lee Hope, Arthur M. Winfield, Louise Keene (later changed to Caroline Keene), Margaret Penrose and Franklin Dixon, as well as other pseudonyms, sales figures rose to such an extent that he had to hire ghostwriters to flesh out the plots in his racy style. Each ghost writer was paid a flat fee of $125.00 per title, (remember this was in the 1930s). Edward Stratemeyer died of pneumonia just 12 days after the first sensationally popular ‘Nancy Drew’ was published, and Mildred Benson took over as the most promising ghost writer. After his death she came into conflict with his two daughters, who inherited the syndicate rights. They took over writing the series, arguing constantly about the way they wanted to portray Nancy, but girls in the 9-11 age range still find to this day, in this heroine, a perfectly behaved goddess-sleuth. New titles in the series continue to be introduced, and are hugely popular with clever girls of all ages.
