Lines from the Library (April 2002)

By Frankie Shaw

Book clubs can be more than literary discussion groups. They can nurture strong bonds of fellowship and support, which are sometimes not apparent until one of the members is in dire need. Often, we feel helpless when touched by another's grief. We want to help and show we care but it is difficult to express that sympathy and caring in a meaningful way. Fraser Alexander was too young to die, but when he lost his battle at 4 years of age in the Hospital for Sick Kids, the members of his Mum's book club decided that they would keep his memory alive, honour his mother Claire and give joy to other children in the community by way of a donation to the library. We were touched by the gift of a whole set of Usborne Young Puzzle Books by Susannah Leigh, and hope they bring pleasure to our young readers, who will remember young Fraser when they open each book.

New additions to our shelves.
