The Puslinch Library

Lines from the Library (May 2001)

By Frankie Shaw

Quite soon now, we will have another 2 computers for public use. This is exciting news for our members, creating as it does greater opportunities for users to access the Internet for education, information and pleasure.

Last year the Canadian Library Association amended its ‘Statement on Intellectual Freedom and Internet Access', outlining the basic right of all people to have access to the Internet with the fewest possible restrictions.

Here in Wellington County, it has been decided that unfiltered access will be available at all 13 branches.

In order to safeguard the long-standing relationship of trust between libraries and children and their parents (or guardians), the Wellington County Library has determined that all users are expected to use the Internet in a responsible manner.

Parents must be aware that some information on the Internet is of a mature nature and may not be what they feel is suitable for their children. They, alone, must be responsible for the information selected by their children and must set their own standards and guidelines. They are encouraged to read the Canadian Library Association brochure, ‘Have a Safe Trip; a parent's guide to safety on the Internet'. These brochures will be available at the library shortly.

It will not be the responsibility of library personnel to monitor sites selected.

I feel that we will not have a big problem, here in Puslinch, with children accessing unsuitable sites, since the majority of our younger members are accompanied by their parents, who have to drive them to the library, and so will be on hand to monitor the sites visited by their offspring.
