Lines from the Library (May 2003)

By Frankie Shaw

On April 26th Ex-Puslinchers Paul Conway and his wife Leslie Robbins launched his new book " Hex Holes and Other Openings"- Canadian recitations of the ‘versed' kind.

For a couple of hours Paul was at the library giving impromptu performances of many original writings in his unique and gifted way. His repertoire of stories is diverse and wide ranging, drawn from the classical and folk storytelling traditions in Canada and across the world.

A few years ago this talented couple hosted storytelling sessions at the Boathouse Cafe in Guelph, then at the Sherlock Holmes pub before moving up to the Bruce Peninsula, where they now entertain at wonderful country supper evenings or matinees, combining the art of storytelling with good food. If you are in the Tobermoray/ Ferndale area and would like to experience a full performance by Paul and Leslie together with other professional storytellers, you may reserve in advance by calling 795-7477.

Paul has written produced and performed in theatrical and storytelling events ranging from grand opera to light pastiche. His production, "The Mermaid of Yellowknife Bay" at the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre in Yellowknife, won the 1996/97 NWT Aurora Award for Modern Storytelling. We were honoured to have them here.

So, Oprah Winfrey recently announced the return of her book club. The original club ran on-air from 1996-2002 and was credited with an upsurge of interest in books and with increasing book sales. It was also criticized for its feel-good selections. This time Oprah intends to focus on the classics and hopes to "make classic works of literature available to every woman and man who reads". We will await with bated breath to see whether "Pride and Prejudice" or "Oliver Twist"will be adorned with "Oprah's Book Club" stickers, and whether our request list for the next (un-named) Oprah book will be quite as trusting as the last.
