Lines from the Library (June 2002)

By Frankie Shaw

There's no doubt that interest in Canadian authors and Canadian books continues unabated, with reading still being the most popular of pursuits.

Canada Reads, CBC's hugely successful program, initiated this year, will return to the airwaves in the Spring of 2003, inviting Canadians to choose another book to read together. A week after it was announced as the winner during the first edition of Canada Reads on Canada Book Day, April 23rd, Michael Ondaatje's ‘In the Skin of a Lion' re-entered the Globe and Mail's best-seller list, where it has remained to this date.

Due to the success of Canada Reads, the five novels nominated in the first edition will air as dramatizations this summer in a series entitled Canada Reads (dramatically). They will be heard beginning Sunday June 23rd at 10pm on CBC One and repeated Monday on ‘This Morning' at 11.00am on Radio One. They will run in the following order;

June 23rd, 30 & July 7 - The Stone Angel by Margaret Laurence.
July 14- Whylah Falls by George Elliott Clarke.
July 21, 28 & Aug 4 - In the Skin of a Lion by Michael Ondaatje.
Aug 11& 18 - The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.
Aug 25 A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry.

The web site www.cbc.ca/canadareads contains further details about Canada Reads including the on-line book club and profiles of each book and author from the 2002 edition.

Our summer StoryTime will run through July and August with young Nicholas Lawson as the leader. Nicholas ran the program last year and brought some innovative ideas to capture our young members' interest. Nicholas will also be seen during regular library hours in his capacity as library assistant during the summer break from school.
