Lines from the Library (June 2003)
By Frankie Shaw
With the summer holidays upon us, it is timely to mention, now that school's out and bored kids are kicking their heels with nothing to do, how easy it is for them to flip on a movie and escape into fantasy land. Nothing wrong with that, in moderation, but fantasy viewed to excess, particularly violent fantasy can affect emotionally vulnerable children.
We need to keep them busy; we need to keep their minds active and informed; we need to make them help out with chores and to help out in the community; it keeps them out of trouble and helps them to see that they are needed and that they can contribute in a worthwhile way. They need to develop hobbies in which they can lose themselves; what better hobby than a love of reading?
This brings me to the point of my little introduction, and where the library can fit in.
Our summer student is all set to host a new Summer StoryTime. Each Friday morning from 10.00-11.00 am., there will be lots to do for the 3-5 year old age group - sensational stories, cool crafts and fabulous fun. We are taking bookings now, so please give us a call to register your little one.
For the older kids there is the Reading Club. This year the theme is 20,000 Reads Under the Sea, so dive into the library this summer and get ready to read! Pick up a reading log during the 1st week in July and report back at your own pace to collect your prizes. This programme is for all ages and is kindly sponsored by the TD Bank. It's a fun way to develop a lifelong habit which will enrich your child's life and create opportunities for a lifetime.
We are also considering a reading group, where readers can each take turns in reading aloud a book which is geared for their age group. This will develop confidence with the written word and extend vocabulary skills. Please let us know if you would like to sign up for this group - a new venture here.
Mr Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has arrived!
