On this occasion the treat didn't come fast enough so she jumped up on the shoe rack, knocked over the treat jar and helped herself. The treat jar is now kept on the top shelf of the closet. ![]() On wet days, like today, Pearl wears her new raincoat when she goes outside. ![]() Trying out the new doggie booster seat. ![]() Today was sunny and warm, so we went for a walk in the Rockwood Consevation Area. Pearl's Water Adventures Yesterday, December 17, 2006, was a beautiful day, reminiscent of Spring. So Pearl and I arranged to go for a hike with Suzanne and Calvin (Pearl's boyfriend). So off we went up to the Jesuit lands at the north end of Guelph as there are some nice safe trails there. We started out, but unbeknown to us, part of the trail had been ripped up to make room for the expansion of the cemetery. So we had to make our way through construction mud and puddles. The dogs got thoroughly wet and rolled in the mud. I don't think there was any spot on Pearl that was still white. Once through this part of the hike, we walked through fields and forest and the dogs ran back and forth, rolled in poop and had just a great time. We eventually arrived at a small river with a lovely red bridge. Calvin decided he would check out the water and went down to the rocks and in for a swim. Pearl, on the other hand, decided to take a much more direct approach and she simply jumped off the bridge into the river. She had never really been swimming before but she started paddling right away. She did not seem to know which way to go and seemed to be struggling. I tried calling her to come towards me but she went under the bridge and for what seemed like an eternity but was only a few seconds, she was out of our sight. Both our hearts stopped momentarily until we saw that she had safely climbed onto some rocks under the bridge. The question then became how were we going to get her out of there. The area was not very accessible from land, the water was deep and cold. Finally Suzanne was able to reach down and grab her by the scruff of the neck and lift her up to me and back to safety. Pearl simply shook herself out and seemed totally unconcerned with the commotion she had caused us all including Calvin. Calvin proceeded to bark at her and nip her rear as if to say "You idiot, don't ever do that again." Funniest thing is he would not be quiet or calm down until I put Pearl's leash on and then he was instantly calm as if he sensed that with her leash on she was safe. Note: Calvin, an Austrailian Cattledog x Pointer is shown a few pictures back. ![]() This where she jumped off the bridge. ![]() This is where she was rescued from. The weather was OK, the temperature +10 F, so Pearl and Paul and I decided to go for a walk around the farm. Pearl thoroughly enjoys this as she gets to run through puddles and get all muddy, sniff a million things and run around at great speed, at least for a westie with short legs. On our way back, we were crossing a huge puddle when I slipped in the mud and fell into the puddle. What a mess I was, dripping water and mud, my boots full of cold water to the top. Pearl and I were a couple of sorry looking individuals. Fortunately we were not too far from home. Once home, I peeled off all my wet clothes, put them in the washing machine and put some dry clothes on. Next it was Pearl's turn. I ran some warm water in the tub and Paul brought her in and in the tub she went. She doesn't really mind the tub. So I rinsed her all off, got her out of the tub, wrapped her in a couple of towels to minimize the shaking and then dried her with the hair dryer and brushed her so she looked like a proper Westie again. I decided I should have a turn in the bathtub so run a lovely hot bath with some great bubble bath that my friend Barb had given me for Christmas. So I'm in there having a luxurious soak when Pearl decides she is going to jump up on the edge of the tub and have a visit. Then she decides she is going to walk around the tub and investigate the other side. Just as I am reaching to turn her around, she slips into the tub with me. So there we both are enjoying the bubbles (sorry, no pictures); maybe next time that's what we should do - just have a bath together. ![]() Snug and cozy after the big walk. ![]() Visiting with John Bush... ![]() ...and giving him an ear kiss. ![]() Brigitte had a new collar made for Pearl with her name and phone number on it. ![]() ![]() Pearl in the snow at Rockwood. ![]() Pearl with Calvin. ![]() Calvin visiting at home. ![]() At home with Rosie.
