Council approves toll on the 401 ABERFOYLE, ONTARIO--The Puslinch Town council has voted unanimously to abolish property taxes in the Township and will will raise money by putting in a tollbooth on the Puslinch section of the 401. Councellor Pat Dempsey made the announcement on Friday. The 401 highway runs through Puslinch Township and according to an old by-law in the "By Way" act of 1823 allows local individuals or groups of individuals the right to impose a "tariff" or toll on those passing though. According to this law, "A landowner(s) owning the land on both sides of the thouroughfare and that he maintains by his own work, may exact a tariff from travelers." The new tollbooth will be built on the highway between (new) Hiway 6 and Downey Road. Construction is scheduled to begin next spring and completion set for July 1--just in time for holiday traffic. The tollbooth will be automated to accept dollar coins, but up to 20 full-time jobs will be created for change administering technicians.
